Episode 74: The Evil Dead (1981)

The guys head to a cabin in the woods for this week’s podcast on Sam Raimi’s 1981 film debut, the sometimes scary, often hilarious, Evil Dead. The Bit Players talk about the film’s unprecedented acclaim and cult classic status that ultimately spawned a film trilogy and television show, despite all evidence of deservedness to the contrary on-screen. However, there is a lot of good to be found in the young Raimi’s raw talent and youthful direction and the untapped potential that was ultimately fleshed out and improved upon as all parties involved found their sea legs in subsequent Evil Dead material. Perhaps that’s the film’s greatest achievement; not necessarily what’s happening on screen in 1981, but the fact that its material has proved to be endlessly rewarding for audiences over the years. We guess Bruce Campbell doesn’t hurt, either.
