Episode 93: Speed (1994)

The guys get behind the wheel on this week’s movie podcast on the classic Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock action flick, Speed. After what feels like hours spent upon breaking down Bullock’s career through the lens of IMDb scores, the Bit Players spend a few minutes talking about the movie itself, making comparisons to other action films both backward and forward, from Die Hard all the way to stuff like John Wick, realizing that Speed is just a real cut above the rest. Jan De Bont rides the high-octane thriller all the way to boomtown, population: Jeff Daniels, with zero good news to tell.

Masters of Disaster: Twister (1996)

Find something to strap yourself down to, because the newest minisode series Masters of Disaster is here, starting with the 1996 blockbuster Twister. All of the Bit Players can vividly remember being enthralled by the Helen Hunt- and Bill Paxton-led disaster movie, but coming back to look at it with a different perspective yields an entirely new set of realizations. Namely: Twister is a really awesome movie. Whether it’s the still holding up special effects, the incredible cast of side characters — Philip Seymour Hoffman is in this thing, for crying out loud — or the goofy gap-toothed grin that Paxton can barely suppress as he reads Michael Crichton’s words, Jan de Bont’s film truly has something for every type of movie watcher. It’s a disaster cinema miracle.
